This condition in and of itself is not harmful as long as you are having periods at reasonable intervals (every couple of months or so). Your doctor can discuss what the likely reasons in your case might be, based on your history, exam and probably labs (such as thyroid tests). Any abnormalities can then be addressed, and any treatment (if necessary) can be tailored to your goal of either (a) becoming pregnant or (b) just resuming regular cycles.
