I called my doctor's office and the nurse said I >>should wait at least a week before having a blood test, and besides, they wouldn't see me until weeks 9-11 at the earliest.

>Did she give you a good reason why they won't see you til then?

The nurse said there was really nothing they could do if I came in anyway--b/c the heartbeat wouldn't be visible until the 9-11 week timeframe. I was a bit upset by this response, since I had seen my doctor once about my irregular cycles, and had several phone conversations with her about test results, next steps, etc. In April my doctor advised me to give my cycle one last chance and wait until June before moving on to next steps (clomid). So, the nurse's response to my call about possibly being pregnant disappointed me a bit. I guess I assumed I should have some type of prenatal visit, or that they would recommend the test right away and if positive, at the very least they would put me on prenatal vitamins, or something. But since I'm new at this, I instead felt silly after calling.

In general, I've felt a bit disappointed in my doctor's responses overall, so I think this only added to the list. I think she's a very smart doctor, she's just no-nonsense, all business (which I respect)--and since I've only been in for routine exams before this last year, I felt she was fine. But with all that's happened since I went off the pill, I've really felt the need for more personal attention (or at least that she would know my name when I call), and I haven't felt much of that. More often, I've felt like I'm a neurotic pain (even though I think my concerns have been pretty natural). At this point, I'm not sure if I should be considering another doctor, or not. I don't want to "doctor-jump", and I like the idea of being with someone who knows the history. Maybe my expectactions of my doctor are unrealistic? >>

2) Could the herbs I was taking affect the result of the test? >
>Don Quai -- no. The other 2 I'm not familiar with (are they homeopathic remedies?)

>Yes--I read about them in several herbal remedy books. Vitex is also called Chaste Tree Berry and Helonias is also called False Unicorn Root (I think these may be the Chinese names). I'm not really a homeopathic medicine regular--but living in SF and reading about it regularly (and since I felt so helpless), I thought, why not try? Although if I am pregnant, I think I may be a new advocate.

>As always, thanks for your thorough response, Kelly! After learning a bit about your own history via this column, I have so much respect for the fact that you are able to deal with and respond so thoroughly to so many questions day after day (it's inspiring). You really make me wish I lived closer to Lake Tahoe so I could be one of your lucky patients!
