Change in Menstration

I am now 20yrs old, I had my first period when I was about 10yrs old. My period has always been about 30 days apart, usually last 3-4 days, NEVER over 4 days. I have never had any spotting before or after my period, it has always began and ended very heavily. That was until this last month. I went in for my annual pap smear recently, it just happened to be about time for my period. After my examination my doctor said he expected my pap to come back abnormal, because he said I was very red and inflamed (didn't explain what might cause this, and said it wasn't due to being near my period); anyway, my pap came back completely normal. But, the day after I had my pap I began my period, it began very heavily as always, but lasted for 8 days; and then for another week+ I spotted heavily(both very unusual for me). I also had bad cramping with this period, which I almost never have any cramping at all. I have been on birth control pills for about a year and a half. During the time of this period I was on the placebo (green) pills only half that time. So it also concerns me that I continued to bleed even while on the pill(orange). ------------ I would appreciate any opinions or suggestions as to the possible cause of this change. Yes, I realize this can't be a substitute for seeing my doctor. But, with working full time and school full time it is hard to get an appointment, and I thought this might ease my mind until then. Thanks.
