Joanne, It is very variable throughout the country and the world (as evidenced by the responses on OB-GYN-L to similar threads) as to whether or not bone densitometry is recommended. Practicing in NY, it is customaary to order a DEXA (a type of bone densitometry apparatus) bone densitometry when a patient has become menopausal (medically, surgically or naturally) for initial evaluation. This may be done earlier in patients with a strong family history of osteoporsis and may wait 0-3 years after monepause depending upon paatient need and concern (pro and con). Since you will be starting ERT, many physicians would just start therapy at the appropriate time without doing a DEXA. We frequently use Fosamax for patients with osteoporosis for patients already on ERT/HRT or for patients with (severe) osteoporosis with either contraindications to ERT/HRT (at this point in time........breast cancer, for example) or bone loss so massive that ERT/HRT would not be expected to make up the loss.
