Endometriosis/Lupron/HystFrom: Diane (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 31 May 1997 19:28:13 -0500 (CDT)
I am directing my message to one of the Dr.s who may read this. I am seeking some advice. Let me give a brief history: I am 37 and have had endo for apx. 10 yrs. Years ago, I took Danazol twice. Endo came back. I have since taken Lupron twice. Once for 6 mos and again for 12 mos w/addback therapy. My last lap in March (my 3rd) showed extensive endo. Even after taking all the meds, it came back even worse. I have been off of Lupron for a year. My OB/GYN said the endo is all over the left side of my pelvis. Ligaments, cul-de-sac, uterus, ureter, and also ligaments at top of my left leg which is causing me pain in the top portion of my leg. My Dr. also said the endo is deeply embedded into my organs and is beneath some very major blood vessels. He couldn't do much lasering due to this. He said he would not attempt excision of any of it because of the high risk of hemorrage due to the fact it is so deeply embedded. I also had a LUNA done at the time of my lap in an attempt to relieve at least some of the pain. I must say, it helped a little, but not much. I was told my options were Lupron for 2 yrs w/addback or a hyst. Before my Dr. would let me take Lupron he said I must have a bone density test done. I had this done Thursday, and the technician showed me the pictures and the numbers and he said I have osteoporosis in my back and hip. Quite bad especially for my age. He also told me I would have to speak to my Dr. for better information. All I know right now is that the numbers I was compared to were far higher than even slight osteoporosis. I have an appt. with my OB/GYN Tuesday, and am quite concerned. It seems as if Lupron will be out of the question and a hyst seems probably. The problem is that I don't want a hyst. Some women have no trouble agreeing to this surgery, but I do. I know it may be for the best, but I have very strong feeling emotionally about it. It's a very personal thing to me. I wish it were easier for me, but it isn't. My Dr. is not pushing me, and I respect him immensely. He is a very good physician and has seen me through alot and has worked with me far more than maybe others would have. He also has given me support. I guess what I am asking is this (I have 4 children, so having children is not an issue with me not wanting a hyst - it is strictly just how I feel) * I am assuming the Osteoporosis came from the Lupron I took, but is it probably that I developed this on the first round of Lupron which was for 6 mos as opposed to the second round of Lupron I took for 12 mos w/addback? * Would it even be considerable for me to take Lupron again even w/addback because of the osteo? * Have you encountered or know of endo being excised when it is so deeply embedded around so many blood vessels insuch a large area of the pelvic area? * What are the chances of all the endo being removed during a hyst even with ureter and ligament involvement? * Is a hyst what I should really be considering for maintaining my health? I am not asking for answers, just your sought after opinion. This is just very difficult for me. Even your knowledge of this with your opinion would be so greatly appreciated. This is such a dreadful disease which has taken away my quality of life. I want it to be gone, but don't want to lose my female organs if it can be helped, but need to know if there are no other alternatives. I am currently in alot of pain. My Dr. has prescribed Elavil because of chronic fatigue from this. Can't sleep at night and am very fatigued. I am also taking Percocet for pain. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. Even questions I should be asking my Dr. would be appreciated. I look forward to your response. Thanks so much to all for reading.
