>So, my question is, "How dangerous are hospital germs to newborns?" Does anyone have any references regarding how many babies become sick and die from infections acquired in the hospital? I've read that half of all Group Beta Strep infections are assumed to be picked up in the hospital, I was hoping that someone would be able to respond to this question but I figured that no one would. I believe that "hospitals" don't like to admit that people get sick while they are in there care. My daughter had jaundice and starting on day four of her life she had to have her blood tested everyday for four days. This required a heel prick and then they "milked" the blood out of her heel. Some of the tech's weren't very good at drawing blood from an infant. I remember one woman got her blood all over......even on her equipment box. On day 12 of my daugthers life she became very ill. She was rushed to the ER and we later found out that she had late onset infant GBS! Luckily our daughter survived and hasn't had any lasting effects from having GBS. I never tested positive for GBS (although I know I still could be a carrier). I and other nurse friends feel that she could have been infected at the hospital during the times she was having her blood drawn. When I brought this up to my daugthers pediatrician she said that there was no way this could have happened. Well, that isn't true according to all the information on Late onset GBS that I have read. As well as what other hospital personel have told me. I realize that the Doctor could have gotten into trouble by admitting that "they" could have infected my daughter (and I am sure that the fact that my husband is an attornery didn't help). So, my point to all this longwinded babble is that I believe that the hospital can make you or your baby sick. I think it is something that you should be aware of! Can it be avoided? Yes! But not all of the time.
