Ladies,

Lupron and other GnRH agonists are approved by the FDA for use in managing anemia due to fibroids, and nothing else. I opted to try it to reduce the pain and bleeding I had from fibroids and endometriosis even though I was not anemic (low red blood cell count.) It supresses the release of hormones in your pituitary gland that in turn reduce the level of estrogen secreted by the ovaries, and in essence causes temporary menopause. The biggest risk of these drugs is bone density loss due to sudden drops in estrogen in your blood stream. As you may know, bone loss can lead to osteoporosis if you lose enough mass over the years.

Bone loss is the reason that the FDA has prohibited the use og GnRH agonists for more than 6 months, as the risk of permanent damage to your bones is too high. Weigh this risk against the theraputic value of it's use, and ask your doctor if low-dose estrogen supplementation during the course of Lupron is appropriate in your case. You can also tank up on foods high in calcium and other bone enhancing nutrients during treatment.

Good luck!
