Woman, Educate Thy Self!From: Susan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 26 Apr 1997 19:44:59 -0500 (CDT)
I have always been one of those type A people who wants everything sewn up nice and neat. Every time I encounter something new, I want to learn all I can about it, turning it inside out and upside down and really getting to know my subject. Scarily enough, I usually remember all that stuff I take in, too! So, when I got the news from my OB/GYN that I should consider hysterectomy I set about learning all I could. This recommendation came after years of suffering with endometriosis (and a prior surgery for that), a bout with cervical dysplasia (which was successfully treated with LEEP), a cervix so fibrotic (hard) that it could not be dilated, and finally fibroids. I am like a walking example of a GYN textbook or something! One of my big questions about hysterectomy was how my quality of life and sexuality would be affected. It turned out that very few people had taken up the task of writing about these issues, and most of those that had did so in the early to mid 1980's, before many of the new procedures and drugs were available. The women who wrote the books about not having hysterectomies were down right angry, and had such a negative spin on the whole issue. Since I knew that thousands, no millions, of American women were walking around without their uterus', I couldn't imagine that they had all had bad experiences. To make this long story short, I developed a list of books that are informative and supportive and do not pass judgement on the issue of whether or not to have a hysterectomy. Some of the books are not limited to this issue and encompass many OB/GYN procedures and surgeries. The list of non-judgemental reading is short, but very valuable. Here it is, I hope it helps someone. Hysterectomy: Before and After, Cutler, W.B. PhD., HarperCollins, 1988. The Woman's Guide to Hysterectomy, Haas, A. and Puritz, S. 1995. Hysterectomy: Learning the Facts, Coping with the Feelings, Facing the Future, Wigfall-WIlliams,W. 1986 Women Talk About Gynecological Surgery, Gross, A. and Ito, D., 1992 Coping with a Hysterectomy, Morgan, S. PhD., 1982/1985. My Body, My Decision: What You Should Know About the Most-Common Female Surgeries, Curtis, L. M.D. et al, 1986. NOTE: Some of these books are, sadly, out of print. Many libraries still have them, and you can always ask your cyber-friends and others for a loaner! I have also done extensive research into Hormone Replacement Therapy issues and other menopause/GYN surgery issues. If you need a referral to a good read, e-mail me!
