I am pregnant.

I've been told here in Mexico that ultrasound can hurt my baby. Is this true?

My doctor has been doing one a month. This is the fifth in four months.

I'm really worried. I need a prompt reply. ------------- Dear Ms. Silvia Judith Ceceņa:

The most direct answer is, I don't think ultrasound will hurt your baby. Sonography has been used in pregnancies since the late 1950's, and intensively since the early 1970's, and no one has shown a dangerous effect when using standard commercial diagnostic sonographic machines. Now there have been many hundreds of thousands of pregnancies without any reports of problems. We now have people in the third generation, all of whom have had ultrasound as a fetus without any damaging effects. So I think you do not have to worry. The most worrisome thing is people using the equipment who do not know what they are doing. The most dangerous result is the wrong diagnosis or the missed diagnosis. The following is the official statement on safety by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

"Approved March 1993, October 1982"

"Diagnostic ultrasound has been in use since the late 1950s. Given its known benefits and recognized efficacy for medical diagnosis, including use during human pregnancy, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine herein addresses the clinical safety of such use:

"No confirmed biological effects on patients or instrument operators caused by exposure at intensities typical of present diagnostic ultrasound instruments have ever been reported. Although the possibility exists that such biological effects may be identified in the future, current data indicate that the benefits to patients of the prudent use of diagnostic ultrasound outweigh the risks, if any, that may be present."

Good luck with your pregnancy, Peace, Terry J.
