Dear Mary,

Most of my patients with excessive hair growth have difficulty with their periods for the same reasons that too much body hair shows up...excess male hormone; testosterone. To counteract the effects of testosterone on hair growth, spironolactone is used. To counteract the effects on your periods, we most often have to start the patient on birth control pills.

If you doctor has not suggested the pill, he/she ought to. It will regulate periods, help further improve the body hair problem, and help you keep your weight down.

best regards,
