Re: Helping The Doctors IT'S OUR TURNFrom: Ellen (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 Apr 1997 12:11:46 +0000
Hi Roberta, Glad you're getting the patients involved in this discussion! Like most women, I've had good and bad experiences with both genders. In my opinion, being female does not automatically imbue a physician with greater sensitivity or empathy than her male counterparts. (After all, both are trained by the same system.) As the coordinator of the Endometriosis Association Houston Support Group, I hear stories from many women about their doctors. What we find is that most doctors (both genders) fail to listen to their patients. Women want to develop health care partnerships that includes genuine discussion and collaboration. Most are very weary of being treated as simply another naked woman in a paper gown. The relationship often breaks down at this interpersonal level, which can happen whether the doctor is a man or a woman. Our group recently held a meeting about how to develop a good doctor-patient relationship. One of the questions I asked during the meeting was whether the group preferred a female ob/gyn. Only 4 women (out of 40 in attendance) raised their hands. I think this speaks volumes. It means we are desperate for good, quality care -- not gender-based care. The facilities and placement services who are pushing this trend may have some initial success. There are many women who *do* prefer female ob/gyns. But I would argue that the vast majority of women patients simply don't care about this issue. They are more concerned with having someone listen to them, take them seriously, and genuinely care for their well being. These are the most pressing issues. My 2 cents, Ellen Johnson Coordinator, Houston Support Group Endometriosis Association
