Am I diabetic?From: Sonja (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 15 Apr 1997 05:31:33 -0500 (CDT)
Or could I be pre-diabetic or glucose intolerant? A short history: My baby was stillborn Feb. 3, 1997. He weighed 10lb 11oz. The autopsy was inconclusive. Glucose testing during pregnancy was insignificant ie. high normal or just barely over the upper limits of normal. No treatment was given. I am 35yo, 5'4" and 124lb (10lb over my pre pregnancy wt.) I gained nearly 40lb during my pregnancy. Otherwise, I have never been obese. There is no family hx. Now, 10 weeks later, I had a slightly elevated fasting glucose, then a normal 2 hour GTT using 75 grams of glucose. I also had a normal Hgb A1C and liver function tests. Then, I did random fingerstick checks 3X/day for a week. Fasting glucoses averaged 110-130mg/dl and 1 to 3 hours post meal glucoses ranged from 120-160mg/dl. My caloric intake is decreased as I am trying to get back to my pre-pg wt. My activity level is moderate. My Dr. says I am definately not diabetic and he doubts that I am glucose intolerant. He admits he is not very knowledgable about pregnancy or diabetes and is thinking of referring me to an endocrinologist who visits here in the outback of Australia every 6 mo. What is my next step? What investigations would you recommend? I am interested in trying to have another baby but very much afraid that history will repeat itself. Thanks very much. Sorry my post is so lengthy.
