Dear Dr. Robinson,

I found this site on Excite durinf a web search. I am not sure that this is what you are looking for, but as you said there is Not much on the subject. Hope this might help. Thank you very much for trusting us to look for an answer for you.

The First Signs of Polyneuropathy

The first sign of the beginning of polyneuropathy is tingling in the feet or lower legs. The tingling sensation may occasionally also occur in the hands. Many patients also experience this tingling as a "pins and needles or formication” sensation. If this initial stage of the disorder is not recognised by the doctor, this sensation can lead to serve pains in the legs and feet as the disorder progresses further. These pains occur in particular during rest. In some patients these sensation disturbances resulting from diabetic polyneuropathy are so severe that they cannot bear the bed covers on their feet at night. If the illness is not treated by the doctor at this stage, these symptoms may progress to cause numbness. Once this stage has been reached it is particularly important that these patients follow an intensive daily foot care routine. You must show any small injuries and deformities to your doctor immediately. If these small injuries go unnoticed because of numbness, they may become infected and cause ulcers. This is also referred to as diabetic's foot.

So in brief the most important signs are:

Tingling/burning sensation in the hands and feet Formication in the hands and feet Numbness of hands and feet Pains in the feet during night rest

If you should experience these symptoms, tell your doctor without delay. He/she will then quickly examine you to determine whether you have diabetic polyneuropathy. If detected early, this illness can be treated successfully.

In support of this, ASTA Medica offers a simple diagnostic unit called "Thio-Feel” which the patient or family member can use and which is obtainable from pharmacists for DM 9.80.
