I do breast exams on all my patients and believe it is even more important in someone who has had a previous breast cancer. If there is not a breast to examine (i.e., after a mastectomy), I do a chest wall exam and palpate both axillary and supraclavicular lymph nodes. My nurse or I check on when the last mammogram was performed as well. The only time I might not do a breast exam would be if the woman told me she had just been to her breast surgeon or oncologist and had just had a thorough exam. If you go to another doctor who does not perform a breast exam, ask why not -- and find a doctor who will give you the comprehensive care you deserve.
