There is a trend in our specialty towards "minimal invasion," meaning the less you do, the better. In theory, by leaving the cervix in, you will not disturb the support of the cervix and upper vagina, nor will you disturb the neural tissue there. As such, this may lead to a better result in terms of future pelvic/vaginal relaxation, and the theory is that sexual function is less disturbed than it is in a total hysterectomy. These theories are difficult to prove, as no one can really scientifically compare sexual function with the 2 methods, as each person is different, and it is difficult to measure. If you have a subtotal, it must be for nonmalignant reasons, and you should continue to have annual pap smears. Hope that helps, even if too long winded.
