There are multiple studies which show that if the pregnant woman smokes, there is a doubling of the incidence of low birthweight (defined as less than 5 pounds 8 ounces) and a doubling of the incidence of unexplained stillbirth. About 10-15 years ago, there was one study that showed a 1.5 fold increase in the incidence of each of these if the pregnant woman did not smoke and another member of her household did. If a newborn goes home to a household where one or more smokers reside, it has a two fold increased risk of being admitted to the hospital for pneumonia in the first year of life and a two fold increased risk of having asthma.
