Re: Medical procedureFrom: Kelly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 27 Mar 1997 20:04:49 -0600 (CST)
Laura A "sonohysterogram" is also called saline infusion sonography, but I like to call it a "water ultrasound" -- that pretty much describes it. The procedure entails doing a routine vaginal ultrasound. Then, the doctor inserts a speculum and then threads a thin catheter into the utrine cavity. A small amount of sterile fluid is then instilled into the uterus and another vaginal ultrasound is done. This technique is wondrful for showing details of the uterine lining, like polyps or fibroids right under the lining. Some doctors have also tried using other liquids to get a look at the tubes and to see if the tubes are open; this particular method is not as widely done. Please talk to your doctor and she/he can clarify how she/he does the procedure and why it might be a good idea for you to have it.
