Re: About endometrosisFrom: Kelly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 26 Mar 1997 23:39:51 -0600 (CST)
Ankey Endometriosis is a condition where the same type of tissue that lines the uterus gets outside the uterus. It can implant (land) on the tubes, the ovaries, the bladder, the bowels. It frequently causes painful menstrual cycles or pain with intercourse and sometimes infertility. The most definite way of diagnosing endometriosis is to have a laparoscopy, a surgical procedure where a slender telescope like instument in inserted thru your navel. Endometriosis can be removed by excision (cutting it out) or ablation ("zapping" it with a laser or electrical current). It can also be treated with medications. You should make an appointment with your doctor to discuss why she/he thinks you might have endometriosis and what your options are. Many, many women with endometriosis go on to have perfectly normal pregnancies and healthy babies once they conceive. Monique wrote about her terrible experiences but they are not the rule. Good luck -- and please ask your doctor the same questions you asked on this forum.
