There is a lot of misconception out there about this kind of surgery! Your student did NOT have cancer. She had a pre-cancerous lesion; one which COULD have become cancer under certain circumstances, but was likely NOT CANCER. The treatment for cervical CANCER is RADICAL surgery or radiation. These precancerous conditions are called by a variety of names: Dysplasia and Carcinoma-in-situ are two commonly used terms. The usual care for patients who have undergone this kind of therapy is simple. Nothing in the vagina for 2-4 weeks. Report any fever, pain, or persistant bleeding or discharge. Follow up PAP smear in 4-6 months and use condoms til then.
