Hi Karen! I'm sure that you will get some very thorough explanations from the doctors as to why these annual exams are necessary at any age, but until you get the professional responses, here's mine: Annual exams ARE important, even in patients who have undergone hysterectomies. There are different schools of thought regarding whether or not the actual PAP test is necessary, but that is only one small part of the annual exam performed by a gynecologist. Your mother's physician would do a pelvic exam, and a breast exam, plus screening for other medical and health factors. The PAP test is one way that physicians can help ensure that women will come in once a year, but it is not the only reason our ob-gyn's want to see us! I hope that you will be able to talk to your mom, especially after you receive some physician responses and are armed with the facts, and convince her that it would be in her best interest to return for an annual exam.
