Re: Abnormal pap smearFrom: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 21 Mar 1997 21:52:08 -0600 (CST)
Eight years ago, at the age of 21, I also had an abnormal pap smear (class 2). My Doctor at the time told me that I had two options: 1 - have a biopsy or 2 - wait 3 months and come back for another pap smear. He strongly recommended the biopsy. He felt that if I waited I might develop cancer. Needless to say I had the biopsy and then after the results came back, without explaining anything to me, the doctor performed the cryogenic surgery. He basically brushed off any of my questions and gave me that Father knows best attitude. I had friends who also went to this same doctor and an alarming number of these women also had the same experience as I did (with the abnormal pap #2, biopsy & cryogenic surgery). I had a couple of friends who went to different doctors who told them to come back in a couple of months for another pap - which led to them having a normal pap again. Was my doctor being over zealous? Is it normal protocol to do all of this for a class 2 pap? I became very distrustful of this doctor and stopped going to him shorty after that. I would also like to ask what other womens experiences have been with their doctors after they had an abnormal pap? Thank you - Michelle
