Mammograms Before Fifty? Help Please!From: barbara (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 17 Mar 1997 21:44:07 -0600 (CST)
As a breast cancer surviver and sorry to say 60, I don't fall into the problem of, at what age to start, doing mammograms BUT... I belong to a surport group with many gals in their twenties, thirties and forties. I am one of the OLD ONES... I would appreicate some input from you OBGYN's about your feelings on the recent decission by the NHA that women forty are TOO YOUNG to have breast cancer... So no mammograms for anyone till fifty... My son-in-law is a BC surgeon and he says he has operated on many young women, refered to him by OBGYN's, that do in fact have cancer. I belong to a breast cancer chat-line and I am amazed at how many of them are very young. They are very upset and feel your hands are tied by this action as you cannot recommend a mammogram till late in their lives. In my entire life I have NEVER been to an OBGYN that has not eximined my breasts during a routine checkup. I ALWAYS knew what you were looking for, so why the ruling? Does it make any sense to you? I was 23 when I had my first child but I remember being eximined by my OBGYN... Please, any opinions on this will be most helpful.
