GYNECOLOGIC: Why would I begin bleeding before finishing a course of Provera?

I have had fairly regular, heavy (I think, but OK per my doctor) non-painful or barely-painful periods, but recently had 15 days' worth of light bleeding instead of a "real" period. Same thing for the two prior months, except those were more like 9 or 10 days.

He was not worried; exam was normal (no fibroids or anything obvious) and he said it must be "hormonal" and he put me on Provera, 5 mg. twice daily for 7 days. Mostly, it seemed, because I was bothered by the ongoing bleeding.

I had this once before years ago, but I think it was 5 days; anyway, it was for infrequent periods and I realize the point was to see if a period started afterwards; it did.

Back to the present: the problematic bleeding stopped for three days but about 4 days into the course I started again, with cramps (not painful) and red bleeding that seemed like a period trying to start. My question is: When most women have to wait till after the Provera to see if a period starts, why did mine start before I even finished it? I'm one day after finishing the course of meds and have heavier bleeding and some cramps but nothing outrageous (not as heavy as I am used to.) Will it possibly start up heavier in the next day or two?

More importantly, I'd like to know the hormonal reason I started bleeding only 4 days after starting the Provera instead of after the course. Dr. said, "that is normal" and a friend said, "maybe the dose was not high enough" but I think my friend could have been wrong or inexact so I'm looking for a real reason because I like the scientific details. THANKS! (I'll ask my dr. again when I see him in a few weeks but I'm curious.)
