GENERAL: painful examsFrom: Kim (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 May 2009 13:51:35 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I've searched the archives and can't find my answer exactly. From everything I have read, pelvic exams are not supposed to be painful. Here's my problem...I have never been sexually active, but have had several exams. I'm assuming my hymen is no longer intact, because the physicians I have seen assume I am sexually active. Anyway, I have been diagnosed via laparoscopy with endometriosis and have been told they think I also have adenomyosis. Pelvic exams are always painful for me and seem to be getting worse...even pap smears. The exam is painful when the insert the speculum, which I always figured is from being tense (no matter how hard I try, I can't relax...I really do try, though), but it also hurts in the pelvic area. Even the papsmear causes pelvic pain. After the exam, I have pretty severe cramping for the rest of the day and sometimes even the next day. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I am overdue for my annual exam because I am so afraid of the pain. Menstrual cramps have gotten a lot worse, so I'm afraid of what an exam will be like.
