CONTRACEPTION: Birth Control Pills/IUDFrom: Ariane (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 31 Mar 2009 22:21:51 -0500 (CDT)
A month ago, after my annual exam, I asked to go back on birth control since I now have a relationship and would like to not use condoms all the time. After my last failed pregnancy (there have been 4), I had been considering an IUD, but never got one. That was my first choice for birth control but since the relationship is new my dr. wanted me to wait a few months. So I was put on the pill. I was prescribed Modicon. I have had very bad luck with pills in the past and am very skeptical that any will work. I've been on Ortho Cyclen, Ortho Tri Cyclen, Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, Triphasal, Nordette and Ortho Novum 1/35. My body has reacted unpleasantly to all of the them. Mostly constant bleeding, extreme weight gain and moodiness. I've also tried the bc patch (forget the name) and Nuva-Ring; this was the worst and caused horrible cramping. The Ortho Novum 1/35 seemed to work alright, just made me gain weight. It was the last one I was on (a year ago) before the Modicon. My Dr. said the Modicon should work out because it is very similar to the Ortho Novum...I had high hopes. My normal period is very light and usually only lasts 1-2 days. I started the Modicon on the first day of my last period and haven't stopped bleeding plus my flow is much heavier than I'm used to. It's been 3 weeks! The WORST part is the lower half of my face has started breaking out severely with cystic acne. I've always had mild cystic acne, it runs in my family, but all I seemed to get(before now) was a large cyst once a month usually a week before my period. Now, my whole chin is covered in cysts. It's painful and embarrassing!! I realize that Modicon is actually suppose to help acne, but it's not helping mine. Nothing else, that I can think of, has changed in my lifestyle besides the birth control pills. I called my doctor and asked if she could switch me back to the Ortho-Novum 1/35. I guess I'd rather gain weight than this. But this is my question, I guess: If Modicon and Ortho-Novum 1/35 are so similar will switching pills really help the side affects? I'm really discouraged with bc pills right now and remember why I always end up quitting them. Years ago I was on Lunelle, which I LOVED! Do you think I should try the Ortho-Novum 1/35 or should I try something else completely? Is there something besides condoms that I could use? Does spermicide work reliably? Should I just ask my boyfriend to get a vasectomy? Neither of us want children. I'm 30 and would like to be able to sex with my boyfriend without worrying, without condoms and without all the blood. Thanks for any advice offered. :):)
