PREGNANCY: All tests were normal---trisomy detected only in third trimester !From: Vicky (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 28 Mar 2009 18:48:07 -0500 (CDT)
Before I start to panic (!), I would definately appreciate an answer from a doctor. My frend had all the screening tests done for trisomy and down and all were supposedly normal. However, at her third trimester scan, they saw something wrong with the heart and after doing an amnio, they said her baby had trisomy... They mentionned that this should have been seen earlier... My question is: if there is a heart condition or other symptoms of down or trisomy, should these be picked up in the earlier test (HCG, PAPPA-A, Alpha, thickness of neck, two prior scans and no problem seens with major organs, baby normal growth, normal heart rate.) or is it possible to suddenly see something wrong with the heart or other organs only at 30 weeks scan ? She is devastated and would have terminated the pregnancy is she would have know earlier. Also, if a baby has down or trisomy, would this baby be smaller than most babies, weigh less and possibly have an abnormal heart rate ? Thank you for taking the time to reasure me !
