PAPSMEAR: ASCUS but no HPV test could be done

I'm confused as to how it's possible to have a satisfactory sample of cells to do a Pap test, and have a subsequent ASCUS result, yet the report then states that there was "insufficient cellularity" to do the usual immediate follow-up HPV test. This was a ThinPrep test, which I understood one of the benefits as being the ability to do an immediate HPV follow-up, eliminating the need for a second Pap test. How much accuracy can I place on the ASCUS result?
