It sounds like there are 2 different issues here. Being the survivor of a vanishing twin scenario indicates that there were 2 fetuses when you were in your mother's uterus, one did not survive and was reabsorbed or passed by your mother. The Dermoid cyst you developed at age 16 also known as a benign teratoma, is not related to this. It is a germ cell tumor of the ovary, a tumor of the cells that form the eggs and meet up with sperm to form a fetus. These germ cells have the potential to form all kinds of tissue and often form teeth, bone, hair, skin sometimes brain like tissue or thryoid that can actually put out thyroid hormone and interfere with growth and development. This is not as freaky as it may have seemed to you, 2 separate events, not related to each other. When the dermoid (teratoma) is removed, that is the end of it, no long term problems except that they can be bilateral 15% of the time. Feel better, you are not a freak!
