GENERAL: Ovary still in pain postop, want it gone, but I'm not sure about effects at my age and need helpFrom: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 8 Jan 2009 13:23:10 -0600 (CST)
My left ovary has been a constant source of misery since a 7-cm cyst was removed 19 months ago. It just never felt right and it continues to stir up problems. Twice now in the last 6 months there were small cysts on it, which fortunately resolved with BCPs. That's not even the main problem, twice in the last 6 months that ovary has adhered to other areas, first the abdominal wall and then the colon. My last laparoscopy was a month ago, but it feels like when my doctor moved the ovary back to where it should be, the pain just travelled with it. And, it gets worse as weeks go by. I am contemplating whether to just ask my doctor if he would consider removing it, but I'm not sure what risks for the future I would be taking at the age of 43. I've had a hysterectomy. I would still have the right ovary, would that be sufficient enough to avoid HRT. What is the current thinking as to the appropriate age for ovary removal? Didn't it used to be 45? Thanks.
