GENERAL: IBS w/vicious bowel symptoms cleared using GF dietFrom: Marie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 22 Dec 2008 03:40:46 -0600 (CST)
Dramatic help is possible for IBS, despite current medical belief to the contrary, from trying out a STRICT Gluten-free diet for 3 months. A severe, long-standing, undiagnosed case, as mine was, had done considerable damage to bowel mucosa, caused malnutrition, immune system problems, and triggered other disease conditions. You must cut out wheat, barley, rye, oats, ALL processed food with Gluten-containing ingredients. Supplements, vitamin pills, etc must be Gluten-free also. Do your own research ... plenty of material on web to help you. Take probiotics at same time. If you achieve relief from symptoms you're on your way, but will have to stay with the diet from then on to maintain healing. You could always have an invasive endoscopic test/biopsy but this is too often not trustworthy (for reasons I won't enumerate here). Preferably try the diet. After years of suffering 24/7, I started to see positive results within 7-10 days. After a month on the diet I was sure. 6 months later all my bowel symptoms (and even other long-standing conditions) were 90% improved. After a year, I'm thrilled with the results, although I know badly-damaged gut lining can take up to 2 years to properly recover. A life-time on the diet has become a small price to pay for this freedom from painful and distressing intestinal symptoms.
