HYSTERECTOMY: Elevated CA-19-9 is concern for complete HysterectomyFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netFri, 24 Oct 2008 11:20:00 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Doctor, I am a 42yr old female who has had a tubal litgation in 1988 after the birth of my only child. I also had a partial hysterectomy in 1997 for cancerous cells showing in my cervix, along with fibroid tumors and heavy bleeding. I am now experiencing a lot of pain in the lower abdominal area, constant pain on my left side, sometimes right side. Have already been diagnosed with complex ovarian cysts at 2.4CM right ovary and 1.5CM left ovary. Tumor on bladder. My blood tests for CA 125 was normal with a 6, but the CA19-9 is 52. I was told that I had mucinous ovarian cysts. Doctor is awaiting my operative and pathology reports from 1997 to determine if he is going to remove my ovaries for a complete hysterectomy. I am experiencing constant pain on the left side only, nausea, constipation, bloating, loosing weight and now discomfort when trying to have intercourse with my husband. Recent transvaginal ultrasound showed the right ovary cyst has decreased in size to 2CM. The report did not mention the left ovary and doctors cannot explain the constant pain on my left side. One doctor's opinion is to wait a few months to see if condition improves, while another doctor says remove ovaries. I have had UTI's every other month since March 2008. I am tired of taking the CIPRO for the infections, and Naproxen for the pain. It all makes me very sick. My question to you is, what can I do to improve my condition. I am afraid of the cysts growing and/or continuing to appear every time I ovulate. It's becoming difficult to function if I don't take the pills. I am considering the hysterectomy, but the doctor is concerned that I will go into surgical menopause right after the surgery. Any answers you can provide will help me out a lot. Thank You! SMP
