GENERAL: Cholestasis of pregnancy and Gilbert's syndromeFrom: B.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 23 Oct 2008 13:29:05 -0500 (CDT)
When I was pregnant with my twins, I was diagnosed with cholestasis of pregnancy but I wasn't told too much about it. I was put on a medication (which name escapes me now) and I delivered my boys 2 months later without complications. Then, 5 days after delivery, I went into the hospital with severe chest pains and 4 days on a morphine drip, they said that my gall bladder had NO STONES but had stopped working. It was functioning at 19% so they immediately took it out. About 6 months later, I started with the chest pains again and 3 days (2 hospitals, 4 doctors later) they diagnosed me with pleurisy but said that my LFT (liver function test) showed extremely high bili levels. After seeing a GI dr, he diagnosed me with Gilberts syndrome and also told me that it was benign and I must "have it really bad" to be having symptoms. I have now had pleurisy twice and there is always a low uncomfortable pain where my liver is. Could the cholestasis of pregnancy be related to my other liver issues. Is this something I should see a doctor about to tie together or would all of these "benign" problems be unrelated? Thanks in advance for your opinion.
