Re: GENERAL: Tubal Ligation ReversalFrom: Ben Gocial, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 7 Oct 2008 17:56:30 -0500 (CDT)
Message posted on Ben Gocial, MD behalf by: Hope Waltman, Fibroids and Women’s Health Forum Moderator Althea: You have several good questions but the questions are not as easily answered as you might think. Getting pregnant depends on multiple issues; most importantly age. Even with successful reversal of the tubes, an older women may not be able to get pregnant. Fertility of the male (as well as other factors) is also important. Let me answer the questions in order from the perspective of a successful operation (tubes open after the procedure). 1) If the tubes were tied in the middle portion (isthmus of the tube) than the success rate is approximately 70 - 90%. 2) Chance of a pregnancy developing in the tube (called an ectopic pregnancy) is low and at worse 5 - 8%. Most likely, less. The exact causes of ectopic pregnancies are uncertain but are clearly related to the previous surgery and most likely scarring form that surgery. Once an ectopic pregnancy develops, that pregnancy is lost and cannot be saved. 3) The chance of a pregnancy after tubal reversal going into the uterus is opposite #2, ie 92 - 95%. Don't forget that some of these pregnancies (12-15% in general, higher in older women) will be lost as a miscarriage.
