PCOS: Low DHEA high testosterone?From: debbie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 30 Sep 2008 21:12:09 -0500 (CDT)
Can someone please help me understand DHEA Sulfate? I am 41 diagnosed w/ PCOS in 2005. Had high testosterone levels until I began oral contraceptives (Mircette). Now my testosterone free and total is around 17. However, my DHEA Sulfate has always been low. It's now <15... well below range. I have been doing some research and am now worried about the consequences of low DHEA (My endocrinologist never said anything about it and I figured it was nothing to worry about!). I am also on Metformin for insulin resistance. I am reasonably healthy: work out with intense cardio/weight lifting power yoga at least 3-4 days per week for the past 15 yrs. Don't smoke, eat healthy and even dropped the extra 10-15 lbs. around my middle I've had all my life despite exercise/diet from PCOS (thanks to Metformin). I am concerned because research tells me that people with low DHEA levels are really UNhealthy and are much more prone to cancer and heart disease as well as many other diseases. There are also DHEA supplements out there, but I don't understand why someone like me would want to take something that would elevate my testosterone when that was part of my problem in the first place... Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
