Re: Thin Uterus After Ruptured Uterine Cure Is it Safe for Another PregancyFrom: D. Ashley Hill, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 29 Sep 2008 22:16:33 -0500 (CDT)
Althea: First, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a baby is a very traumatic experience. I hope you are counting on your family and friends to help you with this. What you have described is called a uterine rupture. Generally speaking, it occurs about 1 in every 200 times when a woman is in labor after having had a prior cesarean. Sometimes the doctors can save the baby, sometimes not. Some women require a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) but your doctors were able to save your uterus. Unfortunately, you will always be at risk for this. I would suggest talking to your doctor. He or she probably will recommend that you have an amniocentesis to check the baby's lungs at about 36 weeks during your next pregnancy, which is about a month before the due date. If the lungs look mature, then most doctors would perform a c/section at that time to prevent you from ever going into labor. This is not a guarantee that it would be successful, but in most cases this is the safest course of action. Also, most of us feel that patients should wait at least 9 months to get pregnant after a c/section, but, again, your doctor would know your situation the best. My sincere condolences. Ashley Hill
