PREGNANCY: Need to wean now I'm pregnant?

I am 5 weeks pregnant, and still nursing my 16 month-old son 3 times a day. I had previously done some research on the internet, and felt reassured that I would not need to wean my son while pregnant (he still seems to enjoy nursing, and refuses to drink cow's milk). I saw my OB this morning, and she advised me to wean him, as she is concerned that I risk having another low birth-weight baby if I nurse while pregnant. My son was low birth weight (5lbs 10oz full term) due to a poor placenta that matured too early, and low placental fluid levels. I am perfectly willing to wean if I really need to for the health of the new baby, but very sad at the idea. Is this something that I absolutely have to do, or can I compensate for the extra load on my body providing for two? I already take prenatal vitamins, omega supplements and calcium supplements every day.

Thanks, Jo
