ULTRASOUND: can benign ovarian cysts become cancerous ? (calcifications)

Hello,

I am a 41 year old, non smoker who was on the birth control pill for about 20 years before discontinuing its use in Sept 07 due to irregular bleeding. Stopping the pill solved the irregular bleeding issue but when an ultrasound was done back in Sep 07 they found an 7.5 cm unilocular, thin walled, simple cyst (completely fluid filled). Follow-up ultrasounds after three, then six and now almost a year have shown the cyst to still be there, same size and look, EXCEPT that this last ultrasound showed a very tiny "something" against the wall of the cyst, according to the radiologist (who was different from the other ultrasounds), probably a calcification and nothing to worry about. Says that this happens when cysts have been there a while and that the cyst does not look at all dangerous and is stable. I had also had an additional ultrasound (intravaginal) in Sep 07 with Doppler Flow which showed a benign looking cyst.

I am rather worried about this last tiny calcification development (reading about psammoma bodies and getting rather frightened) but at the same time would like to avoid surgery for something that is benign (also concerned about the risks of surgery such as adhesions etc..). The cyst is asymptomatic for the most part (some pain at ovulation) and I can live with it but I am nervous about the cyst possibly becoming cancerous. Although I realize that any part of the body can become cancerous I am wondering if a benign cyst (if this is what it is .. all my doctors say yes) has a strong chance of becoming cancerous ? A CA-125 test in Dec 07 came back at 7.

Your professional opinion would be greatly appreciated and I thank you for taking the time to reply.
