ASCUS: ASCUS with no evidence of HPVFrom: stayingcalm (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 13 Jun 2008 14:02:46 -0500 (CDT)
Hi everyone, I am 23 and have been sexually active since I was 18. In that time period I have only had two partners (my first partner was also a virgin). I met my second partner almost a year ago and we were having sex frequently. I began to bleed after sex. Not a lot, but enough for me to be concerned (I am a bit of a hypochondriac). I went to my gynecologist and she did an exam. She also tested for STDs. Those tests came back negative. She said she didn't think it was anything to worry about. She said I have a blood vessel that runs along my cervix that may have been getting irritated because of all the sex. Or because I have been on birth control from age 16 to present, that makes the lining thinner and that could cause the bleeding. She also said sometimes precancerous cells on the cervix will cause bleeding but usually by the time they get to that point she can see them and she didn't see anyting during my exam. Either way, she said it wasn't anything to be concerned about. And ironically, it went away a few days after I saw her. And I haven't had any problems since. Now, skip ahead 7 months. I went to a different gynecologist (because I had since moved out of the area) for my routine annual exam. I have still only had the two partners and have also gotten all three rounds of the Gardasil vaccine. My new doctor did the Pap and said everything looked fine. I felt fine and life was wonderful. THEN my Pap comes back with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. They checked for HPV and said there was no evidence of HPV. They went me to come back in 6 months for another Pap. They said it's absolutely nothing to worry about and because I don't have HPV, it's probably just irritation and it will clear up on its own. My question is, what could be the other cause, if not HPV? I don't use tampons. My theory might be my period. I had finished my period the DAY BEFORE I went in for my pap. It was a Wednesday and I was still bleeding a little on Tuesday. I hadn't had sex in about a week due to my period, so I know it wasn't because of that. Could my period have given the ASCUS reading? What else could have caused it? Could it be something related to my bleeding a while back? Could there be something seriously wrong? THANKS!
