STD: Herpes Question, looking for a Doctor's helpFrom: Anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Jun 2008 12:12:17 -0500 (CDT)
I am in almost a decade long monogamous relationship. We are about to be married. Prior to this relationship, I had no other sexual partners. I recently started to feel as if I had some vaginal discomfort, and as a precaution my gynecologist performed STD tests along with yeast culture and UTI culture. Both the urine culture and the herpes culture came back positive. I have no open sores anywhere, and never have had any such symptom. My doctor just simply took a swab from my vagina anywhere inside (she admits she saw nothing there). My partner, the only person I have been with, has never had a single sign or symptom himself, though he had other sexual partners before we met. I have never been unfaithful and have never had any suspicion that he has been, and he maintains emphatically that he never has been. We are both devastated by the diagnosis and have asked for follow up blood work for both of us just to be sure (though I'm told the culture is the gold standard of herpes diagnosis). The scripts are in the mail. My question is...is it possible to have a false positive culture? Is it even possible to take a culture when there are no sores? Is it possible to contract herpes some other way besides sexual contact? I am baffled right now.
