"NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Insertion of an intrauterine device that releases the hormone levonorgestrel may provide long-term relief for women with painful periods and abnormally heavy periods due to adenomyosis, doctors from Korea report.

Adenomyosis, a form of endometriosis, is a disorder in which the cells lining the uterus invade the deeper muscular layers of the uterus. In some women, adenomyosis is silent, causing no signs or symptoms, while in others, there may be pain and heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding."
