It's hard to say why they referred you for a targeted sonogram. It's possible the nurse is not really sure and "shot from the hip" with her response. It's also possible that the placenta is at the top of the uterus but also is too near the cervix. Some women have an extra lobe of placenta (that almost never causes problems). Thankfully, most low placentas revert to normal during pregnancy. Best wishes,
