GENERAL: How to make Pelvic exam/pap smear less painfulFrom: Christina (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 4 May 2008 21:14:15 -0500 (CDT)
When I was about to leave for college(I was 17 about to turn 18) my mom took me to planned parenthood, because I had embarrassingly heavy periods and we had heard that birth control was supposed to help with that. I was informed that they had a program I could sign up for that would let me get on birth control for one year without having to get the exam because I was not sexually active. So I signed up and bought a two months supply of pills. Well I was going to college in Wichita Falls and there was no planned parenthood there, so I went to the college clinic and they told me that they did not recognize that program and for me to get the birth control from them that I would have to get the exam. Well I didn't really want to do that so I had my mom get my pills from the planned parenthood and mail them to me. while I was home for the winter break my mom convinced to go ahead and get the exam when i went back to school so in january i scheduled the exam. Well after doing some research I learned that it could be a little painful so about 30 minutes before the exam i took some advil. I went in for the exam and I was pretty calm...and only a little nervous. I was expecting it to be a little uncomfortable, like i'd read on all the websites i'd visited and it was nothing like that. It was so painful i was crying and when the doctor noticed he "adjusted" the speculum...which only made it hurt worse. Then a few minutes into the exam he comes out with "seems like i've stirred up a little bleeding...don't know why" then he finished the exam and left to let me get dressed. I had scheduled the exam early enough in the morning that i would have time to go to my classes. But after my horrible, painful experience I went straight back to my dorm, took a shower, curled up in bed and didn't get up for the rest of the day. Its been over a year(i've been off of my birth control for a few months because of the fact that I need another exam before I can get them) and I am tired with dealing with my super heavy, long periods. I am still not sexually active(I've never been been sexually active) so I have no doubt that my next exam will hurt just as much as the first one. Is there anything that can be done to make the exams less painful?
