I am 60 yrs old and had a total hysterectomy 7 years ago without any HRT. My mother has osteoporosis and my 4 younger sisters were all diagnosed with osteopenia when it was determined that I have osteoporosis. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis 15 months ago when I fractured my t-12. It was 100% collapsed and I had a khyoplasty and was started on Fosomax D 70 mg and calcium 1500mg per day. 3 months after my surgery I fractured T-11 and in another 3 months T-10. Both of these were small fractures and the neurosurgeon did not recommend surgery unless they got worse and more painful. I began a water exercise class 4 months post op with a lower body weight bearing program. For the past 3 months I have been doing 1 hr of lower body, 1 hr water aerobics with 5lb ankle weights and 30 min walking 3-5 times per week. I have lost 30 lbs and am continuing to lose. I currently weigh 220 and am 5'9 ( down from 5'10). I was a smoker of 1 pkg /week for many years. I currently smoke 1 / day or less. My first bone density was -1.5 in my hip and -2.0 in my spine 15 months ago. Last week I has -5.7 in my spine with a dx of severe osteoporosis. I am being sent to a specialist but my appointment is not for 6 weeks. My Dr. recommended I discontinue and wrist weights and activities that would stress my upper back such as lifting bending and lifting etc. I have concerns about fractures occurring without my doing anything. My original fractures occurred with sneezing. Is there anything more I should do until I can see the osteoporosis specialist? Thankyou
