If you have pre-existing chronic hypertension, in general, if you can keep the BP under 160/110 without medicine, then you don't take medicine. That is relatively new thinking. While attempting pregnancy, I don't know that there is a clear answer as to what medicines you should and shouldn't use per se UNTIL you're pregnant, but once pregnant if you need meds, then Aldomet and Labetolol are the most widely used ones.
