CHRONICPAIN: Ovarian cysts and birth control pills - what are they supposed to do?

I have multiple ovarian cysts confirmed by ultrasound at nearly 5 months after a hysterectomy. My doctor put me on birth control pills for 6 weeks, at which point I'll have another ultrasound. I understand that the intention is to have the cysts either shrink or go away or at the very least prevent any more cysts. However, what I don't understand is what happens if after 6 weeks the birth control pills haven't worked. Does that mean that the cysts are not likely to go away without surgery? Does it mean that the cysts are something other than functional cysts? Given that I've had a hysterectomy and obviously don't need them for birth control or menstrual issues and I'm over 40, these high-dose birth control pills are not something I want to continue on for the rest of my life. My fear is that even if the cysts have improved after 6 weeks, what's going to stop them from coming back if I don't continue taking the birth control pills? The fact that I developed some many in just a four months (both ovaries were healthy when they did the hysterectomy), makes me very concerned that without the birth control pills, they will be out of control.
