I've been to Thailand, and my brother lived in Bangkok for a few months with his wife. Unfortunately, Thailand is rife with STDs, so you could have anything... from something simple that is treatable with antibiotics to herpes. This is relevant if your partner is Thai or an expat- you don't know who he's been with. But, with herpes, you'd likely feel like you had the flu-- you'd likely feel very bad the first time. Just fyi, I got genital herpes at age 24 after about 3-4 weeks of sex with a new partner (that's typical incubation time). I'm 42 and have learned to live with it fine. I'm married, and everything. Do not panic, but do go see a Dr.

Either way, don't panic, but do not wait around with your body, you do need to go to a doctor in Bangkok as soon as you can for an exam, so you can be checked out. Pain and discomfort is your body's way of saying, "Something is wrong!"

You can get a referral to a clinic or hospital from your Embassy. For address and phone numbers for the US, Canadian, New Zealand, Australia, UK embassies, plus hospital and prescription info in BKK, see:

In any *emergency*, first call Bangkok's Tourist Police -- which is a direct-dial four-digit number tel. 1155 or call 02678-6800. Someone at both numbers will speak English.

**NOTE: You should NOT have sexual relations until you have cleared this issue up completely. And afterwards, be sure to use condoms. The pill, etc. is not enough to protect against STDs.**

The Thai medical system is excellent, modeled after the US system, many docs trained abroad and will speak English.

Hope this helps, Anne.
