Re: CONTRACEPTION: Mirena and ovulationFrom: anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 16 Mar 2008 04:55:59 -0500 (CDT)
See http://www.Mirena-US.com and click on FAQ in the menu bar and then click on "How does Mirena work?" It appears that Mirena does *NOT necessarily* stop ovulation. The primary way it works is to block sperm from reaching or fertilizing an already ovulated egg, or to make the lining of your uterus thin (so the egg cannot implant properly). It may stop ovulation, but no guarantee that's how it works. Also, see my posts under "CONTRACEPTION: Mirena vs. NuvaRing" for a comparison. The bottom line for me is that NuvaRing doesn't cause nausea and I can easily insert and/or remove NuvaRing from my vagina, but a doctor has to insert AND remove Mirena during an exam from your uterus-- you cannot insert it or remove it from your uterus yourself.
