GYNECOLOGIC: vaginal band removal?

my obgyn has diagnosed me with a vaginal "band" or "pillar"- a thick piece of tissue (?) the separates the vaginal opening into two sections. it makes tmpons tricky, although i can use them. i can't have a pap smear as there is not enough "stretch" down there, and have been advised against having sex as it would be very painful and there would be a lot of tearing. i'm considering having it removed surgically and was wondering if someone could walk me thru what the procedure and recovery would entail. thanks
