Re: PAPSMEAR: Pap Smear Results from LSIL to HSILFrom: D. Ashley Hill, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 5 Feb 2008 22:42:15 -0600 (CST)
The good news is that cervical dysplasia (pre cancer) usually progresses very slowly to cancer. Sometimes it can take a decade or longer. The bad news is that if the colposcopy (and biopsy) reveal a high-grade lesion, also called CIN-III, then you will need treatment. Treatment in someone your age usually consists of either a cone biopsy (done in the operating room as a quick, outpatient procedure) or a LEEP procedure (done in the office) to remove the precancerous areas. If you smoke, then it is in your best interest to stop, and it is always a good idea to limit the number of sexual partners if this is an issue. Gynecologists should be well-equipped to handle a high-grade Pap smear. Someone mentioned seeing a gynecologic-oncologist, which I do not understand. Those physicians treat cancer, and a high-grade Pap smear is not cancer. Although every physician is different, I have seen some gyn-onc physicians overtreat CIN-III and in your age group you want to be able to retain your ability to have children. Regardless, the cure rate after a cone biopsy appears to be around 90-95%, therefore you should do well. My sincere best wishes,
