PREGNANCY: Early Ovulation in an Ovum DonorFrom: G. Rivera (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Jan 2008 02:01:03 -0600 (CST)
A very close friend of mine recently went through her fifth cycle as an ovum donor, but this time things didn't go as well as they could have and she's really upset and feeling guilty about the situation. I'd like to reassure her that she shouldn't feel guilty or bad, but I don't know enough about it to say anything knowledgeable or comforting. I'm hoping someone here can help me with that. The details: In all of her previous cycles my friend has produced a good number of usable eggs, 15 or more, but this time--despite an ultrasound two days prior to the collection showing 12 follicles--at collection they were only able to successfully retrieve four. Her doctor said that she probably ovulated early and lost the rest. The doctor said it might have been stress-related, but didn't give her any other information. The agency she worked with said they'd never had something like this happen before. She now feels guilty for not being able to produce enough useful eggs for the recipient family and worried that something she did caused this situation. But she is young, in excellent health, and followed the rather strict guidelines the program imposed on her religiously. One of the things that she is most concerned about is this: she confided in me that she and her boyfriend shared a romantic evening the night before her retrieval--no intercourse or anything crazy, but the usual other sorts of petting, touching, and stimulation and she did have an orgasm.
>From what little I know about it all, I really don't believe that the So the questions I have are: Is this really as unusual as her agency (a good, respected one, by the way) led her to believe? Could the romantic time with her boyfriend have caused this in any way? What other things might have caused her to ovulate early, in the two days between the last ultrasound and her retrieval? Thank you very much in advance to anyone who can help. --GR
